brilliant mastering, brilliant effects, brilliant melody, brilliant groove, brilliant chords - love it and can't get enough stars for it :) maybe a bit repeative, but for that kind of tune still a lot of variety - - clear winner in my opinion
5
by Buzzer
A clear winner for me \o/ it's groovy!

Excellent start. Might be a winner! Yes, so far it's the winner, no doubt. Unbelievable. Classy! A genius is behind this. Change around 3 mins is excellent. Did I hear rumours of a remix being made? I'll ask God when he's revealed as the winner.

Awesome! These samples just groove! Keeps it interesting and changes it up a bit at the right times, everything just works together. Only complaint is at the halfway point, the plucking could be just a tad louder when it's by itself.

Upbeat and sweet! Nice kick intro, very good leads! Really like the mood of this song, and the wide use of different leading sounds -- all of them very effective! A great treat. I will listen to this again! Definitely another one of my favorites in this compo.

Joyful, good tune. Must be Buzzer's ;)

You had me at 0:00. Brilliant musicality, nailed the chord progression and a smart melody on top. Would have liked a bit more variety though, maybe a solo session or trick out the drums a bit?

Which way to disco? Lots of effort has been put into this one
5
by AMcBain
Bass bits in your face. On the whole, the song sounds really loud but after the first bits it works out okay. Elrinth? Hmm, I guessed him for #2 ... rams? yeah, could be him. I want to give it a 5, but if I give it a 4, I'd have given an equal number of 3 and 4 votes. However, if one votes purely based on that metric it's not really being fare to the contestants is it? Besides, I did give a 2 to #5. Okay, 5 it is!
5
by hornpipe2
I don't know how you did this. I recognize the flute and bass, that's about it. Genius. Distorted guitar... who would have thought.

Woah! The break through at the start took me by surprise. Up to that point I was thinking it was just another alright song, but that changed it for the better! Amazing energy in this track, great sound leads, alright drum track. Jeeze, the longer this song goes on the more I'm impressed with it! Amazing developments, and a good track to end the compo on. My last favorite.

This would sound great with some VST ! There is something a bit random in the whole thing, or something disturbing in the overall sound, i don't know ... 3 ? 4 ? Ahh damn i'm shaking my head so it's 4 for you : ) There is such a great effort at making something that moves, not static. Epic part at 03:30. Massive use of effects which is nice, you really tried to had some work on the samples. OK, not far from 5 actually :D

Very beautiful and atmospheric. Without drums it would have been 5 stars, i can't understand why they have to be in there... They are also too loud and so making it hard to hear some nice sounds there were in background.

I like the melodies. I feel like the sample pack wasn't designed for such a tune. With some proper VST, this would be PERFECT, something with fold instruments... bits of guitar, female choirs ... Very well done. I really want to give one more star but with this scale it's hard, i'll end up with too many tunes with same rating.

Artist Production Notes:

Just really dig the groove on this one. It's not as ambitious as the other five-stars on my list, but it sets a reasonable goal and achieves with style. Cool bridge too (1:08)
5
by nahob
The play between the slow strings and the quick bleeps is enjoyable. The drum beat is also very fitting, as well as the breakdown about halfway in... very nice. It wraps up very nicely, and I think used a good variety of sounds to their best effect! One of my favorites of the comp.

4

Skillfully conceived minimalism
4
by Ultrasyd
Not bad at all. I was going to say that it's a bit monotonous, then this awesome change. 2nd part is epic ! It has something medieval. I like the drums, with the "fluuuuush" and crash. Very "YM". But i have to give a bit more to the tracks with more work on the sound design.
3

a bit too minimalistic imo - but the tempochange and the overall groove is nice :)

Kinda goes for a "sea song"(?) in the middle ... perhaps could have taken that lead and for more effect overall. Also seems to miss notes in that section. The rest of it just seems to be heavy beats and not any particularly exciting drive.

The lead at the start seems unstable and arbitrarily delayed and not lined up, etc. It appears to get better when the "strings" come in. Not bad, reminds me of some other songs with the "gnashing" effect on some of those background samples.

Bond, James Bond? The beginning cuts out to something new with a drop, which is good because I couldn't see it really continuing that and keep from being monotonous. Nice melodies once again. You guys got the secret of lovely things. I liked the effort of change in chords, even though the momen it changes is a bit strange, i was like "wtf, some notes out of tune". 4 stars is a bit overrated maybe regarding the technic / effects ? But 3 is not enough. It's simple and basic technics but i like this oldschool goodness: )

nice transition from the beginning to the mid.

Definitely the sine samples? The background lead when it came in didn't seem as loud as the repeated baseline and background elements. Kinda got drowned out. Also, definitely a wrong note somewhere just before halfway through. About 2/3rds of the way through it seemed to be the same repetitive bits over and over just a tad too long.
3
by hornpipe2
Fantastic, eking out pure chip sound from the collection of odd "real" samples! Could really use some drums though... we were allowed a white noise, which would have been enough for at least a snare and hihat.

Jovial cracktro music with some familiar phrases, but I guess this is not very serious effort for the compo

I had a gamecard once with the title "99 games in 1" This felt like "3 songs in 1". :P

Ok, i enjoy tracking with only one sample so this was done just because of the fun of that, nothing more :)

Nice one. AT first i found the theme a bit strange but then i liked it - reminds me of some game tune, a bit of an asian melody. The part from 01:45 is sweet, then bass comes back around 02:01, nice :necta:

Ok one. Quite nice sounds but too random melodies imho.

Light. Bassline digs itself down a bit. A bit trancy and a bit asian.

Too raw and those leads have too slow vibrato in them to be enjoyable. Next time, please don't repeat your patterns this many times, it is boring.

Apollo 5/4 STS-136 mp3 ogg flac
Artist Comment: Listened to too much "Take Five" before putting this together, and then I had to fight to keep it from sounding just like the jazz classic. XM -> ModPlug Player with Reverb -> WAV -> lame --preset extreme

:egyptian: the melody is nice - but it is too minimalistic in many places for my taste, but the track is somewhere between 3 and 4 for me.

An original approach (tried myself to do some jazz first too)

by AMcBain
Nice drum work, though the symbol sounds a lot louder than the "snare" and that backbone doesn't really fit as well as it could with the foreground. Much better than the previous song, however! Lead really just seems to consist of switching between instruments at about halfway, they really only seem to work together toward the end.

Awww Jazz ! Cool. It lacks some polishing over the tune, like effects. But i guess that's made with oldschool tracker like xm ?

Jaws? Heeellp! Oh, just a land shark. The beginning I thought was maybe the start of something underwater or a soft lead in to something good, but the rest of the song wasn't really that remarkable. Overall, not terrible.

Clever dark trance track take on the sample pack. Lacks a melody, repetitive, and I'm really not sold on the pad sample.

General volume is maybe a bit low? Is this the eighties? Nineties? That repetitive bass thingy is getting on my nerves, give it a break! Not much happening overall. Boring. crap SIGLOVELY

Good attempt: could definitely do with some percussion for starters, nice idea to use just the strings sample but it's a bit too weak to really make a full song from - it's just a bit bare overall.

I really like the effort at something different. The begining even has a bit of Zelda, let's say "link running in Kokiri Forest", but i lacks some polishing once again and is a bit boring after a while because the melody is a bit random. I have to put 2 because the rating system with 5 stars is restricting
