Welcome to the one and only "60s/70s funk compo"!

Buzzer!

With a glorious Track called: "Funkadelica" Congratulations!

Your Task: Write a 60s/70s funk tune, that stays as true to that kind of funk as possible.

The Rules (short & sweet)

  • write a 60s/70s funk tune
  • do not write something else
  • maximal song length: 10 minutes
  • upload your entry as MP3
  • upload your entry WITHOUT id3 tags
For those who don't know what 60s/70s funk means, here is an explanation by the infamous BitArts: "You might recognise the 60s tracks are mixed with "beat" style, while the 70s tracks are mixed with "Jazz" & "disco" style. but used instruments, the used scales and their arrangement are still the same. The instruments you'd have to deal with are guitar, bass guitar, drums, clavinet, organs, piano, epiano and brass like saxophone, trumpet, trombone, strings and of course vocals (which aren't a must of course). For the later tracks a monophonic lead synth would fit, too. Maybe flute, clarinet and stuff.
If you understand the basics of 60s/70s funk you are able to do the famous 80s funk, 90s etc. up to today's NuFunk club style. A lot of the old 70s tracks are also used in today's very popular french house tracks (Madeon, Deadmouse do french house and/or use elements of it) for example. So, who's capable of setting up funk, could also setup his own stuff to remix without any copyright hassle."

This tune gives the impression of an experienced composer with a lot of routine (playing it safe also). A bit flat and maybe uninspired, but certainly has a comforting feel to it. Love the organ bit. Not overcrowded with simultaneous samples as a couple of the other tunes are. Clean and simple, maybe too clean in fact. Sprinkle some dust and noise over it and it would be very authenthic.

Nice tune. I like how it has the theme of the compo, but also a hint of demoscene style to it. My feet were moving all the way through the tune :) Superb work IMO.

This tune has Buzzer written all over. Very nice basic funk with groovy bass.

My favourite tune, but felt way too well produced sound for being 60s/70s funk :) Well done Buzzer! :)

I'm sure this is by one drunk composer from Turku ;) Nice enough tune on its own but does not sound 60s/70s funk at all, so only 5 points.

Very nice piece! .. but I found it more 'pop' than 'disco'. But i may be a musical retard :)

funky start but the digitrumpet kind of kills it :D

The trumpet seemed a bit too synthetic. Also, a bit repetitive... of course, I say that as if I were able to write songs to begin with, sorry! :(

Really cool start. Excellent organs. A bit noise/skipping (but that only adds to its authenticity). Piano fits very well. Maybe trying too hard to cram all samples in at once here too. Some more calm parts would be fitting.

This one felt most funkey for me. Therefore it gets the highest score. Well done with those guitars.

Most funky of all! Varied melody - not monotonous - Real funk feeling!

Fits clearly best with the compo theme from these tunes imho, 8 points.

This tune has Rams written all over. Kwek kwek kwek. This tune is the most closest funk interpretation as I hate it as much as other funk. This is just repeative and annoying as hell! (Technically) well done!

Quite an enjoyable 70's style funk tune for me. I think at times there was a little too much happening at the same time, which detracted a bit from the overall tune. Still, good work.

the most groovy funky beat of all entrys.

Some of the highest-pitched sounds "hurts" my ears, however in regard to the 60/70s recording devices, this type of thing feels somewhat legit and gives the tune an retroish feel. The tune as a whole is really sweet!

Just a bit strident. Unfortunately it didn't have any modulation, it might have been interesting.

Thats more like it!! - easy listening funk! Hit the style, but seems a bit 'unpolished' :)

This tune has Elrinth written all over. This track does not sound that much funk. To me it sounds more like jazz fusion. Otherwise it is okayish tune that has similar feeling as Outrun-soundtrack. Btw. it should not have repeated twice as it made the tune sound repeative.

Cowbell \o/ Has some nice parts in it - can't say exactly what I don't like that much. The soundquality is strange for me, sounds like 128kb or worse mp3 sometimes...?
7
by NerdN
Some samples + effects sounds a bit modern. Simple and clean though with catchy parts. I don't like the base drum which sounds like a sack of grain falling down on the floor. Excellent material for closed circuit TV-advertising (small TV-networks, hotel channels etc). Gives me a "slideshow" feeling.

a note to less funk :) not hard to guess the author on this one :)

Sounds more fitting, except the strings and particularly the beginning, with the theme than the first two tunes. Six points; some nice rhythms there but also some randomness can be heard, unfortunately.
6
by sqrmax
The drums (particularly the snare) seem to be a bit too in front of the tune. More pleasant than the first two. Might have used about 30 seconds less play time.

by Sensei
Quality was good, but the song didn't quite go with the theme for me. I think it was too flowing and not enough funk. :)

Artist Comment: Enjoy the finnish funky style of living. This funk shall only be enjoyed without clothing. Misuse will make you feel all sweaty. After the proper use of this funk you will feel refreshened and relaxed. Ladies & Gentlemen, Stevie Wonder has left the sauna.

Nice track - though it doesnt really give me the typical "funky" feeling. Maybe a bit too slow and too sad/mellow to be funk for my definition? Closing the eyes I'd say it matches perfectly a snowy cold weather outside sitting inside on a firy chimney <img src=' />

Sounds a bit modern in the beginning. Chipfluenced? A bit moody on the downside, but would fit well for a TV-series named "Detective Afro" or something. A simpler tune without trying to cram all samples in on the same time might have been the way to go? That computer game blip could have been changed to something more appropriate.

From the start it was perfect sound. Great bass and saxophone. you've created a great sound, but not 100% 60s/70s.

I think this is by one beer brewing musician from Herwood ;) Fits with the theme only a tiny bit better than the first tune. I also liked this a bit more, except the strange ending. Did you use sauna sounds with the tune btw? At points there was a sound similar than throwing water on stove.
